Auswahl der Herzen lose Season Opener against Wolpertinger

Sunday, overcast, a bit of drizzle after halftime. Die Auswahl der Herzen opened the season at home against FC Wolpertinger and lost 3-0. The scoreline isn't wrong, but it doesn't really explain what happened.

For most of the first half, Die Auswahl had the ball. They pushed Wolpertinger deep and kept them there. What they didn't do was create much with it. Maybe five real sights of goal all half, and the best of those died on Laura's boot, a clean block that kept it 0-0 at the break. Plenty of possession, not enough end product.

The second half turned everything around. Inside five minutes Wolpertinger went down the right, worked the ball into the box from open play, and scored. That really hurt the Auswahl-Flow. Passes kept going astray in midfield. The back line, which had been solid for 45 minutes, started drifting out of shape.

The second and third goals were the same goal twice. Long ball over the top, defender can't get to the ball in time, striker through on goal, finish. Both times clean.

Fair play to Wolpertinger. They sat through the early pressure, took their one chance when it came, and didn't miss once the space opened up. Die Auswahl didn’t create enough chances in their possession and lost a bit of concentration in the second half. Not the opener they wanted at home. First week of a long season, though.
